Dance Ethics and Codes of Conduct

Just like any sport or hobby, dance has a code of ethics, as well as a code of conduct. One of the most important things that all dancers should remember is that everyone is there to have a good time. We must all share the dance floor and be kind and courteous to other dancers. Never video another dancer, whether on the social dance floor or in a dance class without first asking permission. If you are in a class situation remember to be respectful of the instructor as well as other dancers.

While you may have already learned what the instructor is teaching, it is very possible that your partner has not. If there is a question, be sure and direct it to the instructor. That is what they is being paid for. Excessive chatter is disrupting to the class and you, or your partner may miss that little piece of information that you needed to improve your dancing or execute a particular pattern. This may sound harsh, but try and remember that everyone is there to learn.

Proper clothing and foot attire is highly recommended. The last thing you want to do while dancing is worry about your clothing staying on or being too constrictive or uncomfortable. As far as foot wear, you need either leather or suede bottomed dance shoes or boots. Thick rubber soles or shoe that fall off your feet can lead to injury. Sandals can be especially troublesome, more so when they do not have a back strap.

Dance Ethics and Codes of Conduct

Since we are all dancing closely together a shower, clean clothing, deodorant and breath mints are in order. It is also recommended to forgo, or use perfumes sparingly as many people have sensitivities to them. If you sweat profusely, a towel and an extra shirt or two may be in the cards for you. Chewing gum is not recommended as it often ends up on the floor and then on someones expensive dance shoe. Not to mention that it looks pretty tacky to see a dancer out on the dance floor chomping on gum.

Be tidy and respectful to the club or studio that you are dancing in. You should also always pick up after yourself. This is especially important in a classroom setting. Classrooms often have mints set about the studio for their students and picking up all the little wrappers from around the room after the class is not the instructors job. Leaving empty water bottles is also, "Just not Cool!" While social dancing it is proper etiquette to to accept an invitation to dance, but it is also acceptable to decline. If you decline, it would be improper etiquette to accept another dance offer to the same song. There are always exceptions but try to follow these guidelines.

While some of these suggestions may seem rather obvious to most, look around and I am sure you will see at least one or two offenders! Sometimes people are just unaware or do not think, or are just so wrapped up in remembering all they need to do during a dance that they just plain don't think about anything else. Here's hoping to bring awareness to those who are unaware and thanks to those of you that are! Let's all work hard at maintaining an awesome dance community!

Easy Exercises You Can Do At Home

Do you know that in order to keep your heart healthy and your weight under control, you need to walk at least 10,000 steps each day? This may sound daunting but many activities you're doing everyday such as running errands or doing household works can add up to a few hundred or even thousand of steps for you.

To maintain your health and make sure you achieve the 10,000 steps each day, here are some simple and easy exercises that you can do at home. These exercise routines not only help to keep you fit but also will tone your body as they work on some specific muscle groups. They are a lot more effective than the general exercises such as running errands and doing house chores. Here are the exercises you can easily do at home:

- Stretching exercises. Stand with both of your hands against a wall and move your left leg back so that your foot is flat against the floor. Hold for a few seconds; then repeat this move with the right leg. Another great stretching exercise you can perform is to lie on your back, use both hands, bring up your right knee to your chest and hold it for a few seconds. Repeat this routine with your left leg.

Easy Exercises You Can Do At Home

- Curl is very easy to do. Just lie on your back with both hands behind your head and raise your upper body. Repeat this move for 15-20 times.

- Leg exercises can be done by lying down on your side and lifting each leg repeatedly for 15-20 times. You can also stand and hold on to the back of a chair and lift your legs backward repeatedly.

- Arm exercises. This is important to improve muscle tone. For arm exercises, you can use an exercise band. Place both feet on one end of the band, hold the other ends with each hand and then repeatedly raise and lower the band (in an up and down motion for 10-15 minutes). If you have a pair of dumbbell, you can also use them to exercise your arms.

- If you are working at home and sitting in front of your computer most of the time, try to press down on your toes in an up and down motion frequently. This activity will help to keep the blood circulation flowing in your legs.

- If you know how to dance, put on a music CD and dance for about 20-30 minutes. This is a great cardiovascular workout. You can also incorporate push-ups, sit-ups and jumping rope into your daily home exercise routine.

- Abs workout. I have found a great 8 minute video showing you how to do abs workout at home. You can watch the video at "Best Abs Workout At Home - Only 8 Minute".

NOTE: Always do some stretching to warm up before starting any exercise routine to prevent injury.

The History of Ballroom Dancing

Ballroom Dancing is when a couple performs any of the various social dances that follow a pattern of predictable steps. Examples of these dances are the tango, waltz, fox trot and quick step. It has an immensely amplified popularity spreading across Europe, the Americas and Asia. Ballroom dancing has had a relatively short but interesting history and has evolved from a recreational activity to a worldwide sporting event.

Ballroom dancing originated in England in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in which these dances, such as the waltz, were performed by the upper and elite classes of society in balls and parties. During the late 19th to the early 20th centuries, it became a trend among the working and middle class where they would go to gatherings and events in public dance halls. In the early 1920s, ballroom dancing competitions started to boom that in 1924, an organization was formed called the Ballroom Branch of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. The objective of this organization was to standardize and formalize ballroom dancing techniques, sets of steps and music to which it was danced to.

In legitimate Dance Sport competitions and in social events, there are five standard dances. These are the Modern and the Viennese Waltz, the Tango, the Slow Foxtrot and the Quickstep. These dances are standardized and categorized into segregated teaching levels and utilize vocabulary, rhythm and tempo and techniques which are accepted internationally.

The History of Ballroom Dancing

Although these dances come from very different backgrounds and have special techniques, aesthetics, rhythms and tempos, they do share common qualities. All ballroom dances, as with all forms of dance, are expressions of feelings, thoughts and emotions. These dances may be stricter than other forms of dance and may limit the range of steps and body movement involved, but it is still one of the best expressions of love, joy and pain between two people.

Also, all ballroom dances are performed by only two people, usually a man and a woman. These dances are performed in a certain position termed as the "Closed Hold". In this position, the couple strictly remains in contact in five different points or places. These five points consists of three hand contacts, one elbow contact and one chest contact.

The first hand contact occurs when the man's left hand holds the lady's right hand. Second is when the lady's left hand is placed at the top of the man's right upper arm. In the tango, the lady's left hand is placed behind the man's arm, not on top of it. The third contact is when the man's right hand is placed under the left shoulder blade on the lady's back. The fourth contact is when the lady's left elbow rests on the man's right elbow and both arms are kept in a horizontal line. The lady's arms are held comfortably by the man's and permit her to follow the man's lead with ease. This also gives the couple the appearance of having a bearing of royalty. This is an important characteristic in the ballroom dances that came from Western Europe because these dances were performed in the royal courts. The last point of contact is where the right area of the chest of one touches the right area of his partner. This closeness allows very little room between the partners' faces thus contributing to the dance's romantic appeal.

Dance Classes - Why Should I Enroll My Child?

There are plenty of reasons a child should take dance classes. One reason is health. Getting and keeping children healthy isn't easy. There are just too many temptations out there. There are computers, video games, television, fast food and a bunch of other things. Children are so used to eating junk, until they often don't appreciate healthier foods. If you can't get your child to eat healthier, then get them to exercise. The classes are a good way to have fun while getting in shape.

1. I've got a son. Dancing is for girls.

No, they are not. Anyone can learn to dance. Boys can take the same classes girls can. There are world famous male ballet, tap, modern and jazz dancers. These men are very successful, wealthy and famous. Where would they be if they were discouraged from their dreams?

Dance Classes - Why Should I Enroll My Child?

If the thought of your son dancing makes you uncomfortable, put him into a traditionally male arena. Tap dance is at the top of the list. You son will get into shape while learning to tap dance like hundreds of great performers before him.

2. My daughter won't take a class. She thinks ballet is boring.

There are many other forms of dance in addition to ballet. Lots of little girls do study that dance. But that doesn't mean your daughter has to as well. She can study tap, modern, jazz or even hip hop. She'll get good exercise no matter what class she takes. Introduce your daughter to some other dances. Let her pick the one she wants to study.

3. My child never sticks with anything. I'm not paying for lessons.

Get your child to agree to stay enrolled for a specific period of time. Then after that time period, let them quit if they want. Don't force them to keep taking classes if they really can't stand it. Your child might even be able to take one or two classes before enrolling for the long term. At least that way they'll see if they like it.

Dance classes are a good way for your child to spend free time. If they absolutely refuse to take a class, you can find something else. Just make sure to get them involved with some physical activity.

Exciting Career Prospects in Music

Gone are the days when music was merely considered to be a hobby, or a good way to pass time. Music today is much more than a vocation. It has to have passion and zest. It is very competitive and youthful. And therefore this article has to be young; having the flavour of something new, probably because I am young, my readers will also be young, and it is the youth who make what the present day India is all about - a Young and Dynamic India. Thus foraying into the vast ocean of Music, and especially into Hindustani Music, many young buds like me are likely to be concerned about their careers in this field. With the growth of the entertainment industry, which comprises of all sorts of faculties and organizations, like the film industry, advertisement industry, radio and television industry etc., music has become a highly respectable and lucrative career option. But unfortunately, many of us from a small town like Allahabad are unaware of where music is actually turning to.

Well, in this fast paced age, where everything has converged to the era of "Nano" (I am talking of the latest technology that has zoomed up like a Sapaat Taan of the Gwalior Gharana), I better express my views in a simple, direct, but a comprehensive manner.

First things First - What is Music? Let us first know what Indian music in brief is all about.

Exciting Career Prospects in Music

"Geetam, vaadyam tatha nrityam, triyam Sangeet muchchyate", a maxim from the granth - Sangeet Ratnakar by the famous musicologist Sharangdev.

The above maxim says that Indian classical music, which is a school of thought, comprises of three different arts which are:

(a) Vocal, or Singing (the expression of sound vocally like Khayal, Ghazal, Bhajan etc.);

(b)Playing of a musical Instrument (the expression of music through an Instrument like Sitar, Veena, Harmonium etc.) and last but not the least,

(c)Dancing (The expression of music bodily through the art of Dance).

No matter how you express it, these three arts are interdependent on each other. This is true of either the styles, or Paddhatees, in Indian music -- the North Indian Music and the Carnatic Music.

The growth of the entertainment Industry has opened many new avenues and vistas for those who want to seriously pursue their love for music professionally.

The field of Music (Singing, Dancing and Playing of Instruments) offers many different kinds of jobs based on a person's interest and capabilities. Broad categorizations of jobs available in the music industry include -

1. Teaching: One of the most traditional trades in music. Those who prefer a one to one interaction can start their very own music school where they can teach / train other aspiring singers. You can open coaching class for training students for scholarships and competitive exams such as the Sangeet Natak Academy, MHRD, NET, for shows like Sa Re Ga Ma etc., jingles for ad campaigns. This is no doubt a very lucrative career option as well.

Nevertheless I would like to suggest, come out of this and explore some other options as well!

2. Sound Recording: For this you need to be a trained sound engineer, or a trained sound recordist, a combiner or an editor. But for this one must know the latest computer softwares in the market, recording gadgets and should be able to manage the recording instruments and the techniques easily.

Singers too with a good trained voice can sing at recording studios and lend their voices as back up voices etc.

3. Concerts / Performances and Live Shows: A professional singer/instrumentalist/dancer, or a freelancer, has the choice to perform in front of a live audience at concerts and live shows, including marriage parties, birthday parties and can be a religious music impresario for the NRIs looking back to their roots in religious functions etc.

4. DJ's, VJ's & RJ's: Those who are not directly into singing, but enjoy music all the same, can become a DJ (Disc Jockey), RJ (Radio Jockey) and VJ (Video Jockey). All three deal with music. However, what differentiates them is the medium they use to reach the audiences. A VJ presents music on Television like a Music compere for Antakshari type programmes, an RJ presents music on Radio and a DJ presents music at live shows, or Discos.

5. Instrument Repairing / Instrument Manufacturing: This industry has a lot of scope and prospects, particularly in large urban towns. The traditional as well as modern electronic instruments, or instrument substitutes, are spreading their wings and are getting accepted across the world. A career in this focused zone can not be ignored in today's world.

6. Event Management/ Organizer: You need to be creative and an instictive manager, or a supervisor. One can organize music shows. These days jobs are available for teaching Mehendi and Banna Banni songs for marriages/event management etc. After all, what does SpicMacay do? Or, why to go that far, the music conferences organized by Prayag Sangeet Samiti every year too are an example. Wonder, they may be looking to outsource the management of the event to some one who can deliver.

7. Music Therapists: Examples are plenty where music has been successfully utilized for therapeutic purposes. It has been used even for increasing crop , or milk production. One can setup a clinic in a Spa, like that is done by an aroma therapist or a gemologist etc and cure people and do something for a social cause.

8. Music Composer: This is one of the most creative and innovative field in music where, "You Make Music". Yes, you will make people tap and rap to your music. This seems to be very interesting but at the same time it has to be an intelligent work done. A music director, or a composer, must know various kinds of music. Suppose, you are given a task to make a track which has the 'feel' of Arabic music or Boul geet or Lavani. Did you notice, I said 'feel of'..., that means it should present the mood of Arabic music (or Boul or Lavani), but at the same time it should not be totally Arabic music.

9. Music Arranger: His job is different than that of the music composer but is not exactly what people think. He has to 'arrange' music of a song or background scores. One needs to have a great knowledge of various instruments, sounds etc. and should be able to setup a network of all kinds of music professionals whose services can be harnessed as per need of the Music Director.

10. Orchestration: Remember "Maihar Band" of Ustad Allahuddin Khan! Another one of Zubin Mehta? I can suggest some more names like, Beethoven, Mozart, Hyden etc. All of them created music using various instruments and instrumentalists and created history.

11. Website or Software Designer: I am not joking. If you are a software professional, or a website designer, you can create a music website of your own and also a software and people will admire you.

12. Paper Reading: If you have a good understanding of music, you can write a paper and read it to discerning audiences. That means explain your research or project to an audience. If you know how to use power-point of Ms Office in Windows you can make a power-point presentation and can give lecture using it.

13. Music restorer: This means you can restore music recordings by becoming a music historian, like CDs, Cassettes, Videos, Tapes, books and create you own archive or a library.

14. Music vendor: You can sell music by opening a music shop etc..

15. Others: Go on for music in Hotels, Airlines, Railways, and Army Bands which are fancy and equally professional with fixed salaries. You can drive yourself towards a music Choreographer's job if interested in dance but again be sure that you must know dancing styles from Kathak to Salsa or Jive, Music Journalism/E-journalism [where you need to have good writing skills].

There are many schools and institutions which offer training in music like Music Departments in various known Universities, autonomous bodies like Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Prayag Sangeet Samiti and Bhatkhande University etc. Make sure to check the course schedule before enrolling.

Whichever field you choose, if you want to seriously pursue a career in music, you must get professionally trained. Basically there can be nitch marketing concepts and ideas which create job opportunities. A strong professional training will help you to make your space in this highly competitive industry. Make sure to train well for a good number of years to gain confidence and go a long way in your career because music is a performing art where you cannot afford to have a phobia for stage or Manch as we call it. Try to 'think' beyond the routine. After all, a major part of our music is based on the simple theory of Khayal. Thus be bold and come forward because you have opted for the most wonderful and creative subject which can never be measured. Believe me!

What Are the Past Winners of 'So You Think You Can Dance' Doing Now?

We all love "So You Think You Can Dance" and the contestants. We especially love the ones we voted to win the show. One question remains on our minds though, what are they doing now that they have won. For some it has been as long as four years, and for others, not even one year. Here is a look at what they are doing now since winning SYTYCD. Nick Lazzarini was winner on the first season of SYTYCD. Not only was he an amazing dancer, but was also a great person and quite good looking :). The reward at the time was 0,000 and a year in a Penthouse in New York City. Nick, living in California, decided to take the cash value of the penthouse instead. Since the show, Nick was on the cover of Dance Spirit twice, being the first person to do so ever for the magazine. He also is a founding member of Evolution Dance Company.

Currently Nick also works with Jump Tours, which puts on classes and performances. Benji Schwimmer was probably the most entertaining contestant to grace the screens on SYTYCD and was also the season 2 winner. His prizes included a car, 0,000 and a year contract as a dancer with Celine Dion in her Vegas show. He took the car and cash but did turn down the gig with Celine, stating it was an honor but he didn't want to live in Vegas but wanted to travel and pursue television. Well, he is certainly traveling. Since the show he has been teaching and performing all over the world pushing his and Heidi Groskreutz's instructional DVD's. Benji is also co-producing a movie about dancers called Love N' Dancing. This movie was originally planned as a TV movie, but as it turns out, it will be released in Theaters in these coming months. Rumor on the street is he is also to be casted in two more movies in the future. Additionally, Benji was in Christina Aguilera's music video "Candyman". More recently, Benji was featured in Dancer Magazine n a ten page spread in addition to his photography, CLK'd by BNJI. Sabra Johnson was the first female winner on the show, taking home the grand prize of 0,000. Not bad for only having danced for four years before the show. She is truly a talented dancer and deserved it.

Since the show she has been on the cover of "Movmnt Magazine", February 2008 edition. She has also been traveling the world teaching dance including Australia and South Africa. Sabra does have future goals of maybe taking her talents to Broadway and dance professionally. Joshua Allen is the most recent winner of SYTYCD on season 4, taking home the grand prize of 0,000. There isn't too much to report on him since his win didn't take place as long as even a year ago, but he has been around. Joshua was one of the least trained dancers on the show but really showed his talents to the world. He never once made it into the bottom and took home the prize. Since the show he has been teaching workshops around the country. I am curious to know what the next several years hold for him, one thing is for sure though. What ever he does, he will be living his dream.
